To the Nines!

Does anyone know the derivation of the phrase "dressed to the nines"? I've got to find out.

In the meantime, happy 2009, everyone! One of my resolutions is to keep this blog a little more regularly updated - and I can tell you already I hope to have big news for you all within the next week or two. Stay tunes and have a grand rest-of-the-holiday weekend!

I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question, Clea. But I did want to wish you a Happy New Year!

I look forward to hearing your big news!

Alas, Clea, there is no definitive origin for "dressed to the nines." This site

observes that the number nine has often been used as a superlative but that no actual connection between the number 9 and dress has been found.

Happy New Year

Happy new year to you both!

I can tell you that I've been skunked while researching "the whole nine yards," too. After all, a first down in football is ten yards. Hmmm...

Maybe this will be the year that I can find this out?
