One small step for man...

What do you remember about Apollo 11? Has it retained any magic for you?
I was seven years old, one week away from my eighth birthday. And although I was allowed to stay up, I fell asleep - but I remember being shaken awake to see that historic broadcast. We had landed on the moon - and it was on TV! All in time for my birthday! With all the hoopla surrounding the anniversary, I still get a little choked up thinking about it. How about you?

I can't help getting a bit choked up remembering, either. I was eleven years old, living in Germany, so the actual "small step" happened at what was something like 4am over there. My family didn't even have a tv then (my parents were opposed to tv, it would take another two years for them to cave and get one!) They woke me up at about 3am, and we went to our neighbor's apartment across the hall. Everybody was in their jammies, bleary eyed but excited at watching this historic moment.

Wow - I feel really old all of a sudden!

We were on vacation, staying at some motel. I had been excited about going to see Bonnie and Clyde, the movie which was very popular. (There wasn't a movie theater in our town; there was one in the county but not one that got first run movies.) Daddy said we'd go to the movies after we saw the moon walk. I fell asleep waiting. I remember they woke me up and the picture was so grainy I couldn't really tell what was going on. It was so much clearer on Star Trek.

Have I mentioned I was not a bright child?

I don't tell this embarrassing story often, so consider yourself special.
